Next in Line – The Future of Virginia Tech


The Virginia Tech class of 2010 recruiting class is taking shape as another great group. Twenty commitments comprise the list of future Hokies still making noise in the high school ranks. Fifth Down begins this week a weekly summary of the next generation of Hokies.


Jerome Lewis, TE  (Rochester NY)- Lewis and Bishop Kearney crushed Batavia 40-7. Lewis caught a team-high four passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. Bishop Kearney is now 5-0 on the season.

Zack McCray, DE (Brookville VA, Pictured above) – recovered a bad punt snap in the end zone for a touchdown, but Brookville lost its first game of the season to Liberty 35-20.

Mark Leal, QB  (Delray Beach, FL) – Atlantic was destroyed by Dwyer Friday night 49-7. Leal has some impressive statistics so far this season, though. He has completed 53 of his 92 passes for 858 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Ricardo Young, QB (Washington, DC) – there was no report of a game this weekend, but last week Young led H.D. Woodson past Coolidge 24-13. Young carried his team with 11 completions on 19 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for one score.

Derrick Hopkins, DT (Highland Springs, VA) –Hopkins led a stifling Highland Springs defense to a hard-fought victory over Hanover 13-7. With the win, the Springers move to 3-1 on the season.

Nick Acree, DT (Fork Union, VA) – helped the Fork Union defense hold Episcopal to 163 yards total offense in a 13-6 win.

Mark Shuman, OL (Fork Union) – helped pave the way for 69 rushing yards by Lewis Lickett in Fork Union’s win.

Matt Arkema, OL (Midlothian, VA) – Arkema and the Midlothian Trojans fell to 0-4 on the season at the hands of Cosby by a final score of 31-0.

Caleb Farris, OL (Lexington, VA) – Farris and Rockbridge County was walloped by Spotswood 47-14, Spotswood scored the first 47 points of the game before Rockbridge added two late touchdowns.

Brian Laiti, LB (Fairfax, VA) – Laiti led Robinson High past the Lake Braddock Bruins 28-21.

Theron Norman, DB (Chatham, VA)- Hargrave Military Academy had the week off.

Tahrick Peak, LB (Dublin, VA) – Peak and the Pulaski County Cougars ran into an offensive machine Friday night, falling to Amherst County 33-10.  Peak and the Cougar defense allowed 349 yards of total offense to the Lancers, who are now 5-0 on the season and a state championship favorite.

Justin Taylor, DE (Norwood, NC) – South Stanly High School took on Chatham Central, but the score has been unreported online.

Chase Williams, LB (Leesburg, VA) – Loudon County lost its second straight game after beginning the season 4-0, falling to Carlisle 40-18. It was a shocking loss considering Carlisle entered the game 1-5.

Nick Dew, DB (Virginia Beach, VA) – Dew and First Colonial High School fell to Ocean Lakes 36-14 to fall to 3-2 on the season.

De’Antre Rhodes, DT (Chatham, VA) – Hargrave Military Academy had the week off.

Detrick Bonner, DB (Locust Grove, GA) – Bonner and Luella High School was blown out by Stephenson High on the road 48-7.

Kyle Fuller, DB (Baltimore, MD) – the score of Fuller and Mt. St. Joseph’s game against Georgetown Prep was not reported yet online; the game was played Saturday afternoon at Georgetown.

Dominique Patterson, ATH (Suffolk, VA) – Patterson and Great Bridge dominated King’s Fork for a 41-22 win Friday night.

E.L. Smiling, WR (Stafford, VA) – Brooke Point toppled North Stafford 28-9 in a rivalry game.
